HealthSouth Sugar Land Registered Nurse Named Companywide Award Winner
Soumaila Camara has been a registered nurse at HealthSouth Sugar Land Rehabilitation Hospital for two years. In his role, he cares for patients recovering from major illnesses and injuries such as stroke and other neurological disorders, cardiac and pulmonary conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, complex orthopedic conditions, and amputations helping them reach goals and reclaim independence.
After immigrating to the United States from West Africa about a decade ago, Soumaila accepted a job helping mentally and physically challenged adults in their homes. It was there he found his calling in nursing. His dedication to his patients and the profession of nursing has placed him in the spotlight as the winner of HealthSouth’s overall Outstanding Employee Achievement Award.
Soumaila, one of only six finalists out of more than 28,000 HealthSouth employees, received this annual recognition and was honored at an award banquet held yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama. Award finalists were selected based on their performance in four areas: contributions to extraordinary patient experience, team spirit and cooperation, commitment to continuous quality improvement and going above and beyond the call of duty. The process began with each of HealthSouth’s 123 hospitals honoring a hospital employee of the year. Then, six winners were named at the regional level; and one overall recipient was named for the company.
“Soumaila embodies our HealthSouth ‘CPR’ behaviors of comfort, professionalism and respect. He has a unique ability to connect with his patients and families by giving them exceptional service while instilling confidence and inspiration for them to achieve their best. His distinguished service and attitude make him an excellent role model for other employees, and he is truly deserving of this honor,” said Nick Hardin, chief executive officer of HealthSouth Sugar Land.
He consistently receives praise from patients and their families for going above and beyond in his role as a registered nurse. Soumaila serves on the hospital’s employee committee that creates best practices for patient satisfaction. In addition, he has strengthened his commitment to his patients by completing wound care training and is currently working on a master’s degree in nursing.
